Maryland FLL Championship

FLL037_BLW_webThe Maryland FLL Championship is typically held on a Saturday in late-January or February at the UMBC Retriever Activities Center in Catonsville. For the "Senior Solutions" season the Championship will be held on January 19, 2013.

FLL Teams will be assigned to color groups. If you are rooting for a particular team, please find out what Color Group they get assigned to, and sit in the stands near the pair of Match Tables for that Color Group. (Coming soon)

  • 7am - 8am: FLL Team Members and Coaches check in between and proceed to their Pit Areas. Note: FLL Pit Areas are Off Limits to the general public. Each Team will be given a small number of 'Pit Passes' which will allow them to admit visitors of their choice on a limited basis.


  • 9:15am - 11:30am: FLL Robotics Teams will proceed to Judging rooms. Judging takes place in closed rooms, where cameras and recording devices are prohibited. One adult mentor is allowed to observe the Judging from the back of the closed Judging Room.

  • 9:30am - 11:30am: Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo. Up to 24 Junior FIRST LEGO League teams will exhibit their Projects. See teams of 6-9 year olds demonstrate that, yes, they can do science and technology as well as the next senior engineer.

  • 10:00am Lecture Hall 3: College Savings Plans of Maryland (in Room LH3 in Administration Building across from the RAC).

  • 11:00am Lecture Hall 3: Northrop Grumman Speaker

  • 12:15: FLL Tournament Opening Ceremony.Join our 72 FLL teams, JrFLL Teams, more than 800 young engineers and hundreds of family, friends, and VIPs to kick off the public event. The JrFLL teams will receive their awards as well.
    • Paraskevopoulos_NG_Bio_3Special Guest Speaker:Dr. Nicholas G. Paraskevopoulos

      Dr. Paraskevopoulos has been with Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems for a little over 8 years. His current leadership role is Vice President of Engineering across the ES sector. Nicholas has held a variety of leadership positions in his 8-year career with Northrop Grumman, including Director of Advanced Technology and Systems, Direct of CORE (Internal R&D), and Business Development Manager for Advanced Aperture Technologies and Architectures.
      Before Dr. Paraskevopoulos came to Northrop Grumman, he was Vice President of R&D and Engineering for Terk Technologies in the Consumer Electronics Industry where he headed up the development of a variety of projects ranging from the multi-satellite dish for DIRECTV to the first XM Satellite Radio car antenna to developing the HDTV specification standards for digital TV accessories. During Nicholas’s tenure in consumer electronics, his technical teams delivered over 30 new products from concept to “store shelf.”
      Nicholas has a BSE from the University of Pennsylvania and a MSE and PhD from Rutgers University in Electrical Electronics


  • FLL163_BLW_web1:00pm - 3:30pm: Robot Challenge Matches (three rounds per team). This is the primary public event. You'll see the 64 FLL teams competing in four groups of two for the highest robot scores of the day. Call-backs if necessary.

  • 3:45 - 4:15pm: Final Matches

  • 4:30pm – 5:00pm: Closing ceremony. After a day of technical, teamwork, and research presentations then three grueling hours of table challenges all the teams are recognized for the efforts and key awards are given out.

FOOD

  • The Concession Stand in the Retriever Athletic Center will be open beginning in the morning, and will remain open through out the event.
  • Visitors can also enjoy food in The Commons (bldg. 13 on campus maps). The Grill, on the mezzanine level, is open late until 10:30 p.m. seven nights a week.
  • FLL Teams and Coaches are permitted to bring their own snacks and drinks.
